A historic district shaped like its name

The Wedge is named for its shape. Its Tacoma Register nomination places it between 6th and Division Avenues, from South L Street to its tip at Sprague Avenue, just south of the North Slope.

The City says the Wedge Neighborhood Historic District was established on May 24, 2011, after a request from residents in 2008. It represents a pre World War II, middle class Tacoma neighborhood.

The nomination says most of the neighborhood was built before the 1930s, with homes from the 1890s through the 1930s in Victorian, Craftsman, Foursquare, Bungalow, Dutch Colonial, and Cape Cod styles. Trustworthy Roofing, a licensed and insured family crew working out of 5506 112th Avenue East in Puyallup, checks the district rules before we write a scope. We are a CertainTeed ShingleMaster contractor, and estimates are free.

Is your home in the core district or the conservation district?

The City lists two layers here. In the Wedge Neighborhood Historic District, exterior work that needs a permit can need Landmarks Preservation Commission review. In the surrounding Wedge Neighborhood Conservation District, the City lists only demolition of an entire building and new construction as needing review.

A simple reroof may skip review

The North Slope and Wedge design guidelines note that a single layer composition roof and sheathing may not need a building permit, and so does not need design review. Other roof types may need both. Confirm with Building and Land Use Services at (253) 591-5030.

About the photos on this page

The roof photos below come from our Tacoma job library, which is filed at city level. None is tagged to a Wedge address, and we do not claim any job on a Wedge street.

Why Wedge homeowners call Trustworthy Roofing

  • We start with the district rules

The Wedge shares its design guidelines with the North Slope. They cover roof form, height, and materials, and we read them with you before the estimate.

  • Same roof shape, done right

The guidelines ask owners to keep the existing roof form and ridge height. A reroof here is about replacing what is there with care, not reshaping it.

  • Alley access, planned ahead

The nomination describes north to south alleys behind most blocks, with most garages off the alley. We plan where materials and the trailer go before day one.

  • Licensed, insured, 100% local

A family business with 10+ years of experience, a CertainTeed ShingleMaster contractor, and a shop in Puyallup. Estimates are free and written by the people who will be on your roof.

Featured Tacoma replacement for Wedge shingle roofs

Architectural shingle roof replacement in Tacoma

This photo is an owned Tacoma roof replacement from our job library, not a stock image and not a geotagged Wedge address. It shows new architectural shingles with a ridge cap and roof vents, the kind of finish detail we expect on every roof. On a Wedge house the same steps apply: tear-off to the deck, new underlayment, flashing at each valley, chimney, and wall, and a walkthrough before you pay.

Roofing considerations for Wedge homes

When design review applies

The City says that in residential historic districts, exterior work that is exempt from a building permit is also exempt from historic review. When a reroof does need a permit inside the core Wedge district, it can need Landmarks Preservation Commission review. The conservation district around it has fewer review requirements.

Roof form and height

The guidelines say to keep the existing roof form, and that major changes to the roof plan, such as turning a hipped roof into a gable, are generally inappropriate. Raising the main ridgeline is generally discouraged. New dormers, skylights, and chimneys should sit to the rear and less visible sides of the house.

Materials

The guidelines say most historic roofs in the district were pitched and built for wood shingles, and that composition roofs are an acceptable substitute that has been used since the early 20th century. Metal roofs are not acceptable for historic homes, and clay tile fits only the few Mission or Spanish style houses. If a less common engineered product is proposed, the Commission wants samples and spec sheets.

Narrow lots and alleys

The nomination says the typical lot was 25 feet wide and 120 or 130 feet deep, with north to south alleys and most garages in the alleys. Close neighbors and alley access shape how a crew stages materials and hauls debris, so we work that out with you first.

What drives the cost of a Wedge roof replacement

We do not publish per-square price ranges, because a Wedge roof is priced after we see it. You get a written estimate from the crew that will do the work, and the estimate is free.

  • Roof size, shape, and pitch

A simple gable and a roof with hips, dormers, and several valleys are different jobs. Each valley and dormer adds cutting, flashing, and labor.

  • Layers to tear off and deck condition

The City of Tacoma says adding a layer over existing roofing needs a pre-roof inspection and a permit. On older homes we also check for soft or damaged decking and list any replacement as its own line item.

  • Chimneys, flashing, and edges

Chimneys, skylights, and valleys need new flashing. Gutters, fascia boards, and any rot we find along the eaves are listed separately so you can see them.

  • Permits and district review

If your scope needs a building permit, it may also need design review. The City lists a residential design review fee between $175 and $500, on top of normal permit fees. We tell you up front whether we expect either.

The City says permit exempt exterior work in residential historic districts is also exempt from historic review, and the guidelines note that a single layer composition roof and sheathing may not need a permit.
